2020 Mon Ami Volunteer Spotlights - Thank you all!

“The smallest act of kindness is worth more than the grandest intention.”  – Oscar Wilde

It takes more than a friend to share hope, a helping hand, and even lead seniors through virtual chair yoga classes in a year when our elderly population continue to grapple with social isolation.

The Mon Ami team wants to thank all of the volunteers who rose up to build relationships with seniors through friendly phone calls and last-minute essential errand runs. You truly inspire us.

We wanted to take this opportunity to spotlight some incredible individuals who stepped up in their service over the course of the year and share their story for why they became a Mon Ami.

Arianna T., from Miami, Florida

Mon Ami Celebrates Arianna

Thank you Arianna for your commitment to providing a serene experience to seniors through your virtual chair yoga classes. We had so many seniors reach out and share the joy they experienced from your classes and your instruction will be sincerely missed.

Why is volunteering to serve seniors important to you?

Growing up, my grandmother—one of the most important people in my life—helped my mother raise my brother and me. Living thousands of miles away from her, I feel as though volunteering with Mon Ami has filled my heart with the warmth I was missing. Especially during this time of isolation and uncertainty, I am passionate about practicing yoga and mindfulness with others—alone but together. The vibrant community the chair yoga class has created has inspired me to incorporate yoga instruction into my medical school experience.

What’s your favorite part about supporting seniors?

My favorite part about supporting seniors was observing the positive change in my chair yoga participants’ confidence each week as they learned to listen to their bodies and became comfortable with the movement. A senior’s daughter shared her amazement with me that my class was the only one that her mother could stay completely engaged in for the entire call. Another woman shared her surprise at the simplicity of the movement, yet its ability to alleviate pain. I enjoyed learning that the seniors enjoyed the classes as much as I did.

Snow K. from Newark, Delaware, and California

Mon Ami celebrates Snow

Thank you Snow for your consistent, reliable support for Merle. We appreciate your resilience and commitment to supporting Merle, even if it means battling confusion and working tirelessly to make sure your senior is fully covered in their financials and physical resources.

Why is volunteering to serve seniors important to you?

My mother, whom I lost several years ago at the young age of 65, was an emergency room psychiatric nurse and a social worker. She always found gratification in helping others. I am saddened that she wasn't able to grow older and that I along with my family and children wouldn't be able to grow older with her.

I currently live in Los Angeles, and it's a hard city to navigate and maneuver when you first move here. During the pandemic I felt so much empathy for older people that I would see in grocery stores and wanted to support after I learned about Mon Ami through David Ryu's office, my local council member.

What’s your favorite part about supporting seniors?

My favorite part about supporting seniors is seeing and hearing their gratitude and joy in response to very simple tasks that I can complete for them.

Juna Y. from Los Angeles

Mon Ami celebrates Juna

Thank you Juna for your long-term commitment to Susanna. Even from the picture above we can see the wonderful relationship you have developed with Susanna.

Why is volunteering to serve seniors important to you?

I wanted to use my time and youth to help the elderly during the COVID-19 crisis.

What’s your favorite part about supporting seniors?

Simply put, the friendship.

Barry G. from Southern California

Barry, thank you for your consistent support for Grace and other seniors. We deeply appreciate your clear communication and commitment to your Grace especially through a challenging transition period for her. It has made a mile's difference when you stepped up at times when we needed help!

Heather T. from San Francisco (with a furry friend!)

Mon Ami celebrates Heather

Thank you Heather for consistently supporting efforts from multiple community-based organizations across San Francisco. Your support and willingness to step up for grocery supports, errand runs, and last-minute emergencies truly lifts our spirits.

Why is volunteering to serve seniors important to you?

The numerous opportunities to help my neighbors makes it so easy. It is important to my mental health to be able to give where I can and make sure we all get through this pandemic safely

What’s your favorite part about supporting seniors?

I have a few people I see regularly and it's just great to see them and chat, from a distance of course. I also get to meet new people from all over the city.

Elliot L. from Portland, Oregon

Why is volunteering to serve seniors important to you?

Helping other LGBTQIA folx in my community is really important to me and being able-bodied and available to help feels really special and since volunteering, getting to make relationships with people who paved the way for me feels like a great way to give back.

What’s your favorite part about supporting seniors?

They're funny, witty and I appreciate their outlooks on life. I think a lot of the times we forget about seniors or we think they aren't fun, or lack spunk, or "cute" when really they're just age older versions of their 30 year old self and so getting to be with that and show them I see them feels like a great way to support them, we all want to be seen right?

Mandy C. from Hong Kong

Every day we hear from seniors how powerful it is to be connected with people of all ages, backgrounds, and places. Whether it is a thirty-minute phone call or a helping hand to receive necessities for the week, your work makes a large difference in the quality of life for every senior we serve.

Thank you! Even though this year may have been the toughest year for many of us, we are optimistic and excited for 2021!
